It is so dismaying to learn that a convicted official of Philippine Government still roaming around; the guy is suppose to be in jail. I have learnt that Nereus Acosta, a presidential adviser has been convicted of graft, and his mother as well. Both were sentenced for maximum 10 years and 20 years in jail respectively. In more ridiculousness, the convicted official was seeking clearance from the Philippine court to allow him to leave for Thailand. Isn’t it ridiculous?
In a motion, he asked the Sandiganbayan or Philippine’s anti-graft court to be permitted to leave the country and stay in Bangkok from April 7 to 9 to attend the 1st World Congress of the International Academy of Medical Specialists as presidential adviser on environmental protection.
He should have been suspended by the President, the very first time he was implicated and now he is convicted, I believe it’s only proper that he be fired from his post. Ironically, the reverse situation is what we see.
I believe the Philippine justice is very lenient and very kind especially to those who committed crimes, although it is a positive indication for Philippine’s President Benigno Aquino that justice is being served regardless of political affiliation but paying the crime is tad.
Additional example was the ousted Philippine President Joseph Estrada who was convicted of plunder, yet he never actually served the sentence because he was pardoned by his successor President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
We give the laws more teeth but the Government appears to be sick and timid to bite.
